What I Learned at the 2026 ASTA River Cruise Expo (And How It Helps You Plan the Right River Cruise)

What I Learned at the 2026 ASTA River Cruise Expo (And How It Helps You Plan the Right River Cruise) — Latitude 21 Travel

As a travel advisor and river cruise expert, I attended the 2026 ASTA River Cruise Expo in Amsterdam, where I spent several days touring ships, meeting with executives from every major river cruise line, and experiencing these trips firsthand.

And here’s what I can tell you:

River cruising is one of the best ways to see Europe… but only if you choose the right one.

Before the Expo Even Started… A Reality Check

I arrived a day early in Amsterdam to explore (and fight off jet lag).

We booked a canal cruise that promised wine and tapas.

What we got?

Crackers… and an upcharge for cheese.

We laughed—but it was a reminder:

👉 Not everything that looks great online actually delivers.

So we did what any good travelers would do—we pivoted, made our way back toward the hotel, and made sure to stop for some fresh stroopwafels along the way (which, thankfully, did not disappoint).

And that’s exactly what I help my clients avoid—while making sure they don’t miss the experiences that are actually worth it.

Because Travel Doesn’t Always Go as Planned…

On our last night, we decided to explore Amsterdam like proper tourists—including a walk toward the very well-known Red Light District (because… when in Amsterdam, right?).

It was raining, so we grabbed umbrellas and headed out…

…and immediately got hit with wind so strong it flipped every umbrella inside out and nearly knocked us over.

We looked at each other and said,
“Yep. That’s our sign.”

Turned right back around. Back to the ship.

Drenched. Safe. Laughing the whole way.

Because great travel isn’t about perfection—it’s about the experience.

A Birthday That Set the Standard

The first night of the expo was my birthday, and Tauck absolutely set the tone.

We were transported by canal boat to the Sofitel Legend The Grand Amsterdam for dinner—complete with live entertainment and a full room singing happy birthday.

And when I returned to the ship, my cabin had been decorated to celebrate. (My friends coordinated it—but it’s exactly the kind of thoughtful touch these cruise lines can and do create for their guests.)

It was seamless, personal, and genuinely special, and exactly what the right travel experience should feel like.

👉 That is what the right travel experience feels like.

What I Learned at the ASTA River Cruise Expo

After touring ships and meeting with leadership from brands like Viking, AmaWaterways, Uniworld, Scenic, Riverside, Avalon and more, one thing became very clear:

River cruising is not one-size-fits-all

Not even close…

Every River Cruise Line Has a Different Personality

This is where most travelers get it wrong.

River cruises may look similar online—but they are completely different experiences.

Some are:

  • Ultra all-inclusive with butler service
  • More relaxed and flexible
  • Focused on food and wine
  • Designed for active travelers

We just have to find the right one to match what you are looking for.

Not Sure Which River Cruise Is Right for You? Let’s Talk

If you’re starting to explore river cruising, this is where most people feel overwhelmed.

That’s where we come in.

We will help you narrow down the right cruise line, itinerary, and experience—so you don’t waste time (or money) guessing.

Why I Go (So You Don’t Have To Guess)

During the expo, I stayed on one ship that, honestly, it wouldn’t be at the top of my recommendation list.

The bed was firm. The cabin had an odor.

And that’s exactly why I go to events like this.

That’s exactly why I go to events like this—so you don’t spend your vacation wishing you had chosen differently.

What You Don’t See Behind the Scenes

River cruise expert reviewing cruise lines and planning client trips

After full days of touring ships, attending sessions, and meeting with cruise line executives… we didn’t just call it a night.

We came back, opened our laptops, and kept working.

Reviewing notes.
Comparing cruise lines.
Talking through what actually stands out—and what doesn’t.

Building out ideas, content, and even shot lists so we can better show our clients what these experiences are really like.

Because this isn’t just a trip for us, it may look like one, but it’s very much part of the work we do for our clients.

👉 It’s how we make better recommendations for you.

My First River Cruise Experience: AMA Prima

After the expo, I sailed on the AmaPrima, and everything clicked.

The service was exceptional. The experience felt effortless.

But here’s the biggest difference most people don’t expect:

👉 You’re not on the ship all day.

You’re out exploring.

One of my favorite experiences? Visiting a third-generation tulip farm producing 17 million bulbs a year.

That’s the kind of travel people are craving right now.

Why Working With a River Cruise Expert Matters

You can book a river cruise online.

But what you don’t see is:

  • which cruise lines truly fit your travel style
  • what’s actually included—and what’s not
  • which experiences are worth your time
  • and what to avoid

At the expo, I met with high-level executives from each brand, toured ships, and experienced these products firsthand. Working with a river cruise expert helps ensure you choose the right experience the first time.

We know because we go, and we are working hard to build relationships that benefit our clients.

This isn’t transactional—it’s a partnership.

And it’s the difference between hoping you chose right—and knowing you did.

Planning Ahead (Here’s Where It Matters)

One of the biggest takeaways from the expo?

👉 The best river cruises are booking earlier than ever.

If you want:

  • the best cabins
  • the best itineraries
  • the best overall experience

You don’t want to wait too long.

And here’s something else to keep on your radar:

Major brands are investing heavily in river cruising—including Celebrity Cruises, which is launching its own river cruise product next year.

That tells us one thing:

This space is only going to get more competitive—and more popular.
