Two Very Different Ways to Do the Sun Coast
October is prime for weighing tulum or playa del carmen for the Riviera Maya side and running through the aruba must do list on the calmer Caribbean side.
Every October at Latitude 21, our activity-focused Caribbean and Mexico bookings pick up in two clear directions. Riviera Maya trips anchored on Playa del Carmen or Tulum for the mayan ruins and cenote days. And Aruba trips built around the drier southern-Caribbean island for the arid landscape and Palm Beach resort scene. The two regions deliver almost nothing in common beyond warm water and white sand. Choosing between them is often the first real decision on a warm-weather trip planning call.
Both destinations sit within a four-hour flight from most US East Coast hubs. Both anchor on turquoise-water coastlines. Beyond that, everything about the trip changes based on which one you pick.
Things to Do Playa del Carmen: The Riviera Maya Anchor
The things to do Playa del Carmen shortlist runs cleanly across three categories. Beach days at the beach clubs along the sand strip north of downtown. Cultural day trips inland to the mayan ruins and cenote systems. And evenings walking 5th Avenue, the pedestrian spine of the town.
Mamitas Beach Club and Kool Beach Club anchor the beach day options. Both run day beds, food service directly to the lounger, and DJ sets that pick up as the afternoon shifts to evening. Book a lounger by 10 am on peak-season weekends. Walk-ins get thin fast.
For day trips, the classic full day covers Chichen Itza with a cenote swim on the return. The drive is about two and a half hours each way. A guided tour with a private van and driver removes the logistics stress. Coba and Ek Balam are quieter alternatives with fewer crowds and equally impressive mayan ruins for couples looking to skip the tour-bus scene at Chichen Itza.
Playa Del Carmen also serves as the ferry port for Cozumel. The high-speed passenger ferry crosses the channel in about 45 minutes. Cozumel delivers world-class diving and shore snorkeling at Palancar Reef and Columbia Wall. A single day trip is enough for a couple of snorkel stops and a lunch at a beach club on the island.
5th Avenue, Beach Clubs, and Day Trips
5th Avenue (Quinta Avenida) runs parallel to the beach for roughly 20 blocks and holds the majority of the town’s restaurants, boutique hotels, and shopping. The southern stretch near the ferry terminal is busier and more touristy. The northern section above Constituyentes Avenue is quieter and where the better independent restaurants sit.
For dinners along 5th Avenue, La Perla Pixan Cuisine delivers a modern Yucatan tasting menu. Los Aguachiles handles the casual ceviche category. Alux Restaurant, set inside a natural cave with candlelit tables, is the standout special-occasion dinner in town.
Beyond the beach clubs and 5th Avenue, several other things to do Playa del Carmen make it onto our repeat-visitor lists. Rio Secreto for the underground river cave swim. Xcaret and Xel-Ha for the eco-park experiences. Cozumel by ferry for a snorkel day. The ADO bus network handles longer regional connections cleanly and cheaply if you would rather not rent a car for a specific day trip.
For couples looking at the honeymoon-tier boutique hotels, the Rosewood Mayakoba, Andaz Mayakoba, and Fairmont Mayakoba sit just north of downtown Playa del Carmen along the same canal-and-mangrove system. Each delivers a resort experience with easy town access via short drives or resort shuttles.
Tulum or Playa del Carmen: Choosing Between the Two
The tulum or playa del carmen question comes up on almost every Riviera Maya call. The two towns sit about 45 minutes apart along the same coast, but they deliver very different feels.
Tulum has the postcard aesthetic. The Beach Road runs along a stretch of jungle-backed sand with boutique hotels tucked into the trees. The vibe is smaller-scale, more design-forward, and more expensive per night. Tulum is where couples looking for the boho-luxe aesthetic tend to base. Bring cash. Some of the smaller properties along the Beach Road do not run reliable card processing.
Playa del Carmen delivers a bigger, more accessible town with more nightlife, more affordable options across every budget tier, and easier day-trip logistics to the mayan ruins and cenote systems. Playa also has the ferry to Cozumel and better transit options if you would rather not rent a car.
The Tulum boutique hotel scene includes Habitas, Nomade Tulum, Be Tulum, and Papaya Playa Project. Each runs a design-forward, adults only vibe with intimate suite counts. Playa’s parallel boutique tier includes The Palm at Playa, Le Reve, and the adults-only Deseo Hotel. Both towns also offer classic inclusive resorts nearby, with the Mayakoba properties north of Playa and the Bahia Principe family along the Playa stretch.
Neither is wrong. The tulum and playa del Carmen decision comes down to whether you want boutique-scale beach luxury or town-scale walkability with more variety. Some couples split the trip: three or four nights in each town across a longer Riviera Maya stay.
Aruba Must Do List: Palm Beach to Arikok National Park
The aruba must do list runs on a completely different landscape. Aruba is a drier, more arid Caribbean island with cactus-studded interior and a small population footprint. The southern part of the island holds the resort strip along Palm Beach and Eagle Beach. The northern half is Arikok National Park, which covers almost a fifth of the island in raw desert coastline.
Our standard aruba must do list starts with Arikok National Park. Book a guided UTV or Jeep tour for a half or full day inside the park. The main attraction inside Arikok is the natural pool, a sea-fed rocky basin protected from the open Atlantic. Getting there involves a bumpy 4×4 drive, but the swim in the calm pool while the Atlantic crashes on the outer wall is one of the most unusual experiences on any Caribbean island.
Beyond Arikok, the aruba must do list includes a Palm Beach afternoon at the high-rise resort strip. A drive to the California Lighthouse at the northwestern tip for sunset. A day at Baby Beach on the far southern end for the calm swim-friendly bay. A boat trip to the SS Antilla wreck for snorkeling. And a lunch at Zeerovers on the southern coast for fresh-caught fish at the working dock.
For couples looking to slow down further, the northern coast around Andicuri Beach and the collapsed Natural Bridge offers a quieter half-day. The Alto Vista Chapel and the ruins of the Bushiribana gold mill round out the light-cultural stops.
Beach Clubs, Palm Beach, and the Natural Pool
Aruba’s beach clubs sit along Palm Beach and Eagle Beach. Bugaloe Beach Bar and Grill on the Palm Beach pier is a classic sunset stop with live music most evenings. MooMba Beach Bar offers a lower-key beach day feel. Both accept walk-ins and neither requires a reservation.
For couples looking for the resort scene, the inclusive resorts along Palm Beach include the Riu Palace Aruba, the Hyatt Regency Aruba, and the Ritz-Carlton Aruba. The adults only option at Eagle Beach is the Bucuti and Tara Beach Resort, which consistently ranks as one of the best adults-only properties in the Caribbean. Eagle Beach itself is wider and quieter than Palm Beach with the same white sand and turquoise water.
The natural pool at Arikok is the aruba must do list highlight for most visitors. Wear water shoes for the rocky entry. Bring a small waterproof camera. Time the visit for mid-morning when the light hits the pool best.
For the sunset drink stop, Passions on the Beach at Eagle Beach delivers table service directly on the sand. Book a table two or three days ahead for peak-season weeks. The sunset table category books first.
Combining Both Destinations in One Trip
A small number of our clients build a two-destination trip that covers both the Riviera Maya and Aruba across ten or twelve nights. It requires a connection through the US or a Caribbean hub, since no direct flights run between Cancun and Aruba, but the two together deliver a genuinely diverse Caribbean week.
The classic pattern: four or five nights on Palm Beach in Aruba, then four or five nights in Playa del Carmen or Tulum on the Riviera Maya. The two regions balance each other well. Aruba delivers the dry, arid landscape with reliable weather. The Riviera Maya delivers lush jungle, cenotes, and mayan ruins. Neither trip alone would cover both flavors, but paired together they do.
Practical Notes on October Booking
October sits at the tail end of hurricane season for the Riviera Maya side of Mexico and outside the main hurricane belt for Aruba entirely. So both destinations are bookable for immediate October travel. But October is also the booking window for December, January, and February travel to either destination, which is when peak-season pricing and inventory both tighten.
For Riviera Maya, book Tulum boutique hotels and Playa del Carmen adult-only properties six to nine months out for peak weeks. For Aruba, the Palm Beach and Eagle Beach resorts book on a similar six-to-nine-month runway. Book any private guided tour to the mayan ruins or Arikok excursion at the same time as the base room to secure the top guides.
Renting a car makes sense in both destinations for at least a couple of days. In Riviera Maya, the car lets you reach cenotes and quieter beaches off the resort strip. In Aruba, the car opens up Arikok, Baby Beach, and the California Lighthouse loop that a resort transfer will not cover.
For the Aruba side specifically, a Jeep or 4×4 rental is worth the upgrade over a standard car if you plan to drive the northern coast. The unpaved roads inside Arikok and along the outer coastline are rough. Standard rental sedans struggle.
For the Riviera Maya side, an automatic transmission compact rental handles the paved coastal roads without issue. Book directly through the airport rental counters or through us with the base room booking for a bundled rate.
For a deeper look at Arikok National Park specifically (the trail systems, the natural pool access, the guided tour options that make the park approachable), the Aruba Tourism Authority Arikok National Park page covers the on-the-ground details of the park. For a companion L21 read on the resort scene on the Riviera Maya side that pairs with Playa del Carmen or Tulum, our El Dorado Resorts review covers the five El Dorado properties along the coast we book most often for couples looking at the boutique-luxury tier.
Conclusion
Things to do Playa del Carmen anchor on beach clubs, 5th Avenue evenings, and day trips to Chichen Itza or a cenote swim. The tulum or playa del carmen question comes down to boutique boho luxury versus a bigger, more walkable town with affordable options. The aruba must do list runs on a completely different landscape with Arikok National Park and the natural pool, Palm Beach resorts, and a California Lighthouse sunset. October is the booking window for the coming peak Caribbean season on both destinations. Match the region to the version of the trip you want, book on the right runway, and both deliver on the warm-weather template that keeps our Latitude 21 booking calendar full every winter.
