Every couple who asks me about Secrets Cap Cana lands on the same question about ten minutes in: which suite should we actually book? The Secrets Cap Cana suites all start from the same 592 square feet, across 457 of them, so this is not a decision about size. It is a decision about what you see and what tier you are on.
I have stayed here. Here is how I walk clients through it.
How to Choose Between the Secrets Cap Cana Suites
Pull up the resort map while you read this. Most resort maps exist so you can work out how long the walk to dinner is. This one does not need to.
The property is compact and it is laid out well, which was my favorite thing about staying here. No matter where you land on that map, you are not far from anything. That is unusual at 457 suites, and it takes the single most stressful variable out of the booking decision.
So the map is not answering how far. It is answering two other questions: what will I see when I open the curtains, and am I inside the Preferred Club footprint or outside it.
Everything else is close to equal. Every suite here is a Junior Suite or larger, all of them have a furnished balcony or terrace, and all of them have a bathroom with two rain showers. There is no bad room here. There is a right room.
Where the Resort Sits
Juanillo Beach, inside the gated Cap Cana community, fifteen to twenty minutes from Punta Cana International Airport depending on traffic.
Cap Cana is gated and security controlled, and it is not a formality. Someone described it to me as the Beverly Hills of Punta Cana and that is about right. You feel it at the entrance and you feel it in how quiet the property stays.
The short airport run matters more than people expect. Nobody remembers a good transfer, but everyone remembers a ninety-minute one at the end of a long travel day.
The Junior Suites, and What the View Names Mean

Tropical View and Pool View
Set back from the water. Tropical view looks over the grounds, pool view over the pool decks. These are the value plays, and because the walk is short from anywhere, choosing one costs you a view and nothing else. If you are out of the room by nine and back at midnight, book one of these and spend the difference on something you will remember.
Partial Ocean View and Ocean View
Ocean view is a real ocean view. Partial ocean is exactly what it sounds like. This is the upgrade most people should take if the balcony is where they plan to have coffee.
Swim Out
Ground floor, pool right off your terrace. Honeymooners love them. One thing to know before you book: a swim-out channel is shared water, so people swim past. It is your terrace. It is not a private pool.
Preferred Club, and Whether It Is Worth It
Yes. That is the short version, and I do not say that about every resort’s club level.
We stayed beachfront Preferred Club and the location was perfect. Preferred Club gets you a separate pool, a private lounge, the better positions on the map, and Rosewater, which is a restaurant the rest of the resort cannot book.
Our suite came with a private butler, and the butler was the difference. Not in a fussy way. In a your-reservations-are-handled, your-chairs-are-waiting way. Butler service is tied to certain suite categories rather than to Preferred Club as a whole, so ask me which ones before you book rather than assuming it comes with the tier.
Who should skip Preferred Club: honestly, not many people here. If you will be off property most days it is harder to justify. Otherwise it is the upgrade I push hardest on this property.
The Bungalows and Master Suites
Above the Junior Suites sit the Master Suites and the bungalow categories, including bungalow suites with swim-outs, ocean front bungalows, the Preferred Club Bungalow Presidential Suite and the Preferred Club Presidential Suite.
These are the anniversary rooms. If you are looking at the map wondering what the standalone structures near the water are, that is them. They book early. If one of these is the trip, call me a year out, not three months out.
Dining
Ten places to eat. Bordeaux for French, Portofino for Italian, El Patio for Mexican, Himitsu for pan-Asian, Oceana for seafood, Seaside Grill, Market Café for the buffet, Barefoot Grill for lunch, Coco Café for coffee, and Rosewater for Preferred Club guests.
Bars are Rendezvous in the lobby, Manatees as the swim-up, Sugar Reef and Barracuda by the water, and Showtime by the theater.
One practical note. Not every venue opens every night. That is normal at a resort this size and it is the thing clients are most often surprised by, so build a little flexibility into your dinner plans.
The Seaweed Question, Because Somebody Should Answer It
The beach here is wonderful. It is also on the Caribbean side of the island, and Cap Cana is not immune to sargassum. In a heavy season this stretch can get hit harder than some other parts of Punta Cana. There are barriers offshore and they do help, but they do not catch the fine material, and that is what turns the water cloudy even on a morning when the sand looks perfect.
Broadly, the heavy stretch runs late spring into summer and the cleanest water is late fall through winter. That matches what my clients report back to me.
None of this makes it a bad beach. It makes it a beach with a season. If flawless water is the entire reason you are going, book outside the heavy months rather than hoping, and I will tell you that before you book rather than let you read it on a review site after you have paid.
Who I Book Here, and Who I Send Elsewhere
Secrets Cap Cana is adults only, eighteen and over, and it behaves like it. Honeymooners, couples who want quiet without dull, and small adult groups celebrating something.
It is not a family resort and it is not a party resort. If you want the water park and the noise, the Hard Rock in Punta Cana is a better use of your money, and I will tell you that rather than book you into the wrong week.
That is the part a resort map cannot show you.
